Abnormal thyroid function and/or prolactin hormone can interfere with ovulation and is usually tested with the day 3 hormone tests. The prolactin hormone should be done while fasting. If this test is scheduled, do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before.
Androgens are male hormones. All women make some male hormones, but not in the same amounts as men. Androgen hormones that are often tested in women with PCOS or hirsutism include testosterone, DHEAS, and 17 hydroxyprogesterone.
Progesterone. After ovulation occurs, the follicle that released the egg starts to produce the hormone progesterone. Progesterone helps prepare the uterus to accept the fertilized egg, or embryo, and helps support the early pregnancy. Inadequate levels of progesterone may contribute to infertility or miscarriage. When progesterone levels are tested around day 18-23 of the menstrual cycle, it is to confirm ovulation has already occurred. When progesterone levels are testing during ovarian stimulation, it is to confirm ovulation has not yet occurred.
